“A life lived for art is never a life wasted”– Macklemore
Newcastle based artist Effie Barr has been a practicing artist for close to 20 years. Art is and always has been Effie’s passion in life. A self taught draughtsman, she began her career in her late teens, creating photorealistic portraits executed in graphite with incredible attention to detail, so realistic that they blurred boundaries between imagination and reality. Her natural talents manipulating this medium had her selling to collectors, accepting commissions and exhibiting before the age of 20. Upon leaving school, she completed an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts and continued on to further her studies and pursue a career teaching Art. Obtaining her Degree in Fine Arts and studying Art Education at COFA NSW saw her branch out into other mediums & develop a new style primarily in the form of oil painting. She was reinvented & inspired, her focus shifted to the female form, new abstract styles & her love of line and colour saw her experiment more and leave behind the rigidity of her early career.
“Creativity is contagious, pass it on”– Albert Einstein
Effie’s impetuous love of art, colour and expression grew. She worked in new fields and discovered a passion for sculpture, photography & other painting mediums. She was commissioned by the city of Sydney for a public piece in 2006. She has won numerous Prizes, exhibited in many exhibitions both solo and alongside her peers. North Sydney Council purchased her award winning painting “North Sydney Pool” as part of its heritage collection permanently on display. She has sold her work in Australia and internationally and continues to take on commissions to the present day.
After having children Effie took up teaching both children and adults alike and her passion for experimenting with new on trend techniques & mediums for her students saw her once move into a new creative field. She discovered a new way to explore and express herself in vivid colour & delicate details; she became a practicing Resin Artist and immersed herself in Fluid Art. She loved how every piece is different due to the nature of resin, with its own patterns and intricacies; its instantaneous, artistic gratification.
Today Effie is the owner, founder and primary teacher at Artalicious Studios which she says is her life’s dream realised. She relishes the opportunity to create and share her passion with her students.
